This is embarrassing, but then, so is most of this forum so oh well.
I have IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). Sometimes I suffer more than at others, for example when I am stressed.
I know this condition is actually quite common so I thought that I would start a thread so we can moan and offer each other advice on how we cope with the condition.
So! Right now I have no idea what is going on with my digestive system. I am so gassy it is unbelievable. I am currently taking omeprazole which the doctor prescribed me for the tightness in my chest (which has turned out to be acid-reflux). On a day to day basis (as in, when my stomach starts hurting I take ranitidine which is wonderful. When it hits me, my IBS gives me a constant dull ache in my stomach, with occasional stabbing pains which will normally leave me curled up in a ball in bed, but this sorts it right out! For a while I took daily peppermint capsules which helps indigestion/mild IBS symptoms, but I don't think they helped much. My mum also takes them, but she takes more expensive slow release ones and she says they help but I can't afford them. =/
Anyone else suffer from this in similar or other ways?

Just stress I think. I don't think it effects my life enough to warrant going to a dietitian and getting allergy tested for certain foods. I would sooner give up gluten than dairy though!

Can you explain more what IBS is? Whenever I hear about it, I feel like I sort of have it and sort of don't. How is it linked to anxiety? I'll describe my experience as well --it sounds symptomatically similar to yours.
I have dull stomach aches when I'm nervous and it feels like my intestines are tensing up the same way your muscles tense up during a stressful situation. Sometimes that causes bowel movements and sometimes it doesn't.
Then there is this other thing I have and it's not food, time, physical activity, menstrual/hormonal, or stress-related, where my intestine area (right in the center of your belly, from side to side) will just be suddenly painful; I'll have this sharp feeling like a serrated knife is traveling along my intestines or something. It's the worst feeling ever and usually leaves me laying down and moaning in pain. Like I said it's not hormonal/menstrual related but it's frequency does seem to be about once per month.
Could either one or both of these things be IBS? The first is something I've experienced all my life and the second is something that happened within the past two years.

The thing about IBS is that it is pretty much just any unexplained bowel problems. Like random pains or toilet troubles - if it can't be explained by anything else then doctors will label it as IBS.
Your symptoms do sound like they could be IBS.
A few weeks ago I had a terrible bought that gave me a fever on the first day and left me in bed for three days. Very sharp (yet dull) pains in the centre of my stomach. As far as I can tell it was the result of my new pill, as hormones are a reason for IBS.
I have been starting to wonder if I may have a mild gluten intolerance as I was speaking to a friend who has it and I have similar symptoms to her (including feeling faint for no other reason).
I would suggest keeping a diary of when the pain occurs. Like, the day, time and what you were doing prior to the pain, what you ate three days prior to the pain, and things like that and then see if you can find any patterns. If you do they yay you've found the cause, if not then go to the doctor and they may be able to find one, or prescribe you medication which may help anyway. There are many IBS related meds available depending on your symptoms and some which just help overall.
