Hey guys! Thought I'd start a thread on skincare cause that tends to be a problem for every skin type.
Although, I'm actually asking cause I want some help for my boyfriend. He's got a case of the macho-brain so he's not up to trying "girly" things, but his face has been very oily lately and he has a moderately bad acne problem.
Any tips for oily skin, maybe something he can do other than his daily morning routine? Product recommendations? Natural at-home facial scrubs?

Oily skin! The worst! Mine mostly went away, finally, after a few rounds of birth control but seeing as this is for a dude... Here's some advice/info I've gained after an entire decade of the worst zitty face ever. Keep hair off your face as often and as long as you can. Hair is also very oily and can irritate the skin. Remember to switch your pillowcases and your bed sheets often; people don't do this as often as they should. Think about all the debris your pillow absorbs from your long days... and then you put your face on it every night. Similarly, you shouldn't put your hands to your face very often either. People will often put their hands to their chins and voila -- chin zits. As for medicines, he needs to figure out if he has whitehead/blackhead problems or if he has cystic problems. Oily skin is indicative of cystic; it's what I had problems with most as a teenager. I cant speak for whitehead/blackhead issues as much, but I've heard that products containing salicylic acid (like Proactiv, and plenty of drug-store stuff) are best for that. Products containing salicylic acid are the more commonly sold products, I think. Good OTC meds for cystic acne would be anything containing benzoyl peroxide. It will cause dryness at first but it works amazing wonders because it works by reducing overall oil production and also killing acne-causing bacteria. Clean n Clear has a good line for benzoyl products, last time I checked, but last time I checked was about five years ago. Benzoyl products are usually gels. If he doesn't respond to any drugstore stuff well and it is cystic acne, try prescription Benzaclin. It's a gel that has a higher concentration of benzoyl peroxide than drugstore products. It was a miracle product on my skin until I finally developed a tolerance to it after a year or so. I'm pretty sure there are prescription levels of salicylic acid as well. Hope this is helpful!

My skin care routine is very simple. I wash it in the shower every day (sometimes it's every other day). I either use shower gel, just water or a face/blackhead wash. When I get out the shower my face dries naturally and then I moisturise! Sometimes it can be a fairly standard body cream sometimes its a face day cream. As I have got older I find I need creams designed for the face.
But that is it! I don't cleanse. I don't use foundation, blusher or powder.
And I have really good skin. I don't want to brag but it's true. I get a couple of whiteheads every so often and there are a few blackheads on my chin, but I really, truely think that if you just treat your face sensibly and with respect then it will love you back. I know I am very blessed but I can't stand to see friends who complain of really oily skin and then cover it up in a thick layer of make-up. It's not doing them any favours.
I love eye-make up but I absolutely abhor anything else (bar a little lippy). It's pointless.

Whoa, thanks mercurial! Super helpful! I'll try that out for sure. shadow Yeah I've got pretty great skin too, haha...I get some regular boring zits around my nose sometimes but very rarely. I don't even do anything with my skin at all...sometimes I'll put on a little moisturizer in the summer but other than that it's just regular water. I don't even soap it up....hahaha, am I an evil person?

Nope. We are just very lucky. I only moisturise because my skin feels tight after washing. One of my friends cupped my face a little while ago and then stopped and said "You're skin is so soft" which resulted in the rest of the group feeling my face. =/

I've been really stressed out lately, resulting in some patches of zits and blemishes showing up on my face. Do you guys have any preventative measures for such occasions? They're not very large or anything, but there's little patches around my chin and above my mouth now that flare every time I'm stressing out.

I have nothing to offer I'm afraid, but I am in the same position. My forehead and chin are really oily due to my new BC and it is so annoying. I've changed up my skincare routine to try and help but have yet been unsuccessful. The only thing that has dried them out even a little is a mint and tea-tree shampoo which I used yesterday and today on my hair and I got it on my face a bit as I washed it out. But I don't really think that that is probably the best method. =/ I keep meaning to try steaming my face with hot water with teatree but I haven't got around to it yet, but that might help you.

Thanks, I'll give it a go! I seem to hear good things about tea tree oil

Yeah, me too. I need to get some myself. I came to realise that most of the stuff I'm putting on my skin are artificial chemicals, so it could be better to put something more 'natural' on my skin. =/
